KOTA Territory wrestling coach reacts to Olympics Decision

Posted: Updated:

A KOTA Territory wrestling coach fears for the future of the sport, following the announcement that wrestling may soon be dropped from the Olympics.

The Olympic Committee's decision to remove wrestling from the Olympics starting in 2020 is fueling major controversy.

Gering High School Assistant Wrestling Coach and Gering Wrestling Club Coach,  J.J. Behrens, thinks that the sport's historical significance should take precedence.

Wrestling is considered one of the oldest competitive sports and made it's first appearance at the ancient Olympic Games in 708 B.C.

The Olympic Committee could reverse the decision in May, when it meets to consider a 26th sport to add to the 2020 games.

Behrens says that removing the Olympic dream from wrestling would be damaging to the sport's future.

"The Olympics are the Super Bowl of wrestling," says Behrens.  "And that's what every kid from knee high to college is dreaming to compete for."

Wrestling will now compete against seven other sports vying for an Olympic spot in 20 – 20 including karate, sport climbing, and wakeboarding.
