A well known autism activist says that hands–on learning
is important for those with autism.
But Dr. Temple Grandin, who is autistic, says many
schools are dropping their hands–on learning classes like home economics and
auto shop.
Not only do these classes teach practical skills, but she
says eliminating them may be harmful to autistic students.
Dr. Grandin says growing up with autism has made her
realize the importance of offering autistic students different approaches to
learning.
"I had to get into my 40's to find that my thinking
actually is different," says Grandin. "Most people think
more in words. Some people think more in
mathematics. You know, different people
are good at different things."
Grandin hopes schools reconsider their elimination of
skilled trade classes.
