Panhandle Special Olympics athletes prepare for competitions

Posted: Updated:

Area athletes are getting ready for upcoming competitions.

For the next few weeks, Special Olympics athletes from across the Panhandle will participate in several Unified Special Olympics basketball events.

The team's coaches and athletes are putting in a lot of time and effort to make the upcoming events successful.

Team coach Wendy Kremling says that many of the coaches spend three to four nights every week practicing with their athletes.

The special Olympics panhandle basketball program started seven years ago.

Kremling says the program helps bring out the best in everyone involved.

"It's one of the most unique experiences you will ever find," says Kremling.  "One of the reasons why, is because you will find that you not only cheer for your side, but you cheer for the other side.  and you don't see that in typical sports activities."

If you want to check out an upcoming Special Olympics Basketball game, here is what's going on this week:

On Tuesday, February 16th, the 15 and under group will play at Minatare at 6:00 p.m.

On Thursday, February 28th, our 16-21 teams will plat at the Scottsbluff High School at 6:00 p.m.
