Panhandle car salesman wants people to smash cars for charity

Posted: Updated:

A panhandle car salesman is letting people take a whack at fighting cancer... literally.

The Auto Plaza in Scottsbluff is taking a different approach to fundraising.

Owner Joe Hessler invites people to come out and smash cars... all in the name of charity.

Each donation allows for the chance to take a sledge hammer to designated cars.

All of the money raised will be donated to Saint Jude's Cancer Research.

The charity event will continue through the day tomorrow.

Hessler says no donation is too small because every penny helps.

"If you want to have fun donating to St. Jude's," says Hessler, "what better fun can you have but coming down here, and beating up cars?  And then we're going to lift them tomorrow night at 5:30 and smash them over 40 feet in the air and keep smashing them until all the cancer is out."

Hessler came up with the idea seven years ago after listening to a moving story from a young girl dying of cancer.
