Car demolition raises money for St. Jude's

Posted: Updated:

A car dealership in KOTA Territory is destroying cars, all in the name of charity.

The Auto Plaza's 7th annual Car Smash fundraiser's car-drop went off with a bang… literally.

Last night two junk cars were raised 40–feet in the air and then dropped repeatedly until destroyed.

The car drop serves as the fundraiser's big spectator event, held to raise money for cancer research.

Proceeds from the event will be donated to Saint Jude's Children's Hospital.

D. J. Moss is one of this year's volunteers.

"I was actually here the other day and I helped paint the cars," says Moss.  "Then I was actually the first customer to smash it."

All week community members have the opportunity to smash cars at the Auto Plaza, in exchange for a donation of any size.

The Auto Plaza's owner, Joe Hessler, says he came up with the idea seven years ago after hearing a heart–warming story about a young girl dying of cancer.

Patrons think the charity event is a fun and unique way to raise money.

"There's meaning behind it," says Moss.  "Everybody is trying to get rid of diseases and this is one way to take out frustration and stuff too."

The Auto Plaza will be accepting donations through Friday.
