Nebraska considers adopting Common Core school standards

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska is one of only five states not to adopt Common Core academic standards, but may be headed that direction.

The Common Core academic standards are for math and language arts, and have been adopted by most states in the country.

This week the Nebraska Board of Education decided to pay a National Education Consultant, to compare Nebraska's standards to the Common Core standards.

The Common Core standards include phonics and word decoding skills and Nebraska's standards do not.

Gering Public Schools' Superintendent Don Hague says he doesn't think the state really has a choice.

"Common Core has been adopted by so many states and in order to be able to comply with federal regulations I believe they're almost forced to look at the Common Core."

Nebraska's language arts and math standards were adopted in 2008 and 2009, soon both will need a state mandated five year review.
