Lawmakers advance childcare center bill; mandates liability minimums

Posted: Updated:

A bill that would require childcare facilities licensed by the state to provide liability insurance coverage gets first round approval in the Nebraska Legislature.

There are more than 4,000 licensed facilities that serve more than 100,000 kids in Nebraska.

The bill would require a coverage level of at least $100,000.

Omaha senator Steve Lathrop, who introduced the bill, says this will provide parents with an additional peace of mind and encourage facilities to have appropriate coverage in case of an accident.

Under the bill, if a licensed day care facility fails to maintain $100,000 worth of coverage, they lose their license.
