Merge between two KOTA Territory school districts vetoed.

Posted: Updated:

Recent talk of a merger between two school districts in KOTA Territory has been permanently veto-ed.

Mitchell and Morrill School Districts have discussed negotiations of a merger for a long time.

After Morrill's superintendent resigned following a state audit report, the debate continued between the districts.

Morrill's Superintendent Nick Schafer says last year they thought the merge was necessary to get the school out of debt.

But after further deliberation, Schafer says the two districts will continue to stand on their own.

"I've been in this position for 15 months, and when I was hired I was told explicitly, completely by the board of education that, that is no longer a topic of discussion," says Schafer.  "It will not happen."

Schafer says he is happy with how things have turned out and likes that the two school districts have maintained their independence.
