A KOTA Territory school is getting a special honor as one of the greenest schools in Nebraska.
Lincoln Elementary School is the first ever LEED Gold certified elementary school in Nebraska.
LEED stands for, leadership in energy and environmental design. The rankings are based on sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, innovation and design.
LEED A.P. for the project, Ryan Sterns, says the building is 32% more energy efficient than code, uses 38% less water than any other school in the state and 50% of the building's materials are recycled.
"I think it is a huge thing and the kids that have been involved with this, they've drove by it, they've seen the construction, they've seen slide shows on this, so they know how the building was constructed. Some of these kids may know more about the building than their parents," Sterns said.
Sterns says he hopes accomplishments like this spark other school's interests to go green.
