State Patrol out in full force for St. Patty's celebrations

Posted: Updated:

While Saint Patrick's Day is a religious holiday for some, for others it's a day or night, to drink green beer.

That's why the Nebraska State Patrol is stepping up enforcement tonight.

Scotts Bluff county received a grant for the extra enforcement and troopers will be doing vehicle checks, as well as saturation patrols.

Trooper Lance Rogers says he's hoping for voluntary compliance.

He's asking people to plan ahead to find a designated driver or call a cab.

And of course, wear your seatbelt.

"The State Patrol Troopers have received funding for a grant in the Scottsbluff and Gering area for Friday and Saturday night. We had extra officers out last night who will also be out tonight," Rogers said.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, between 2006 and 2010, 2/5 of those killed by drunk drivers died on Saint Patrick's Day holidays.

In 2010, 80% of the fatal accidents on Saint Patrick's day involved a driver with a BAC of more than twice the legal limit.
