Winds and dust take the panhandle by storm

Posted: Updated:

Strong winds and dust hit the panhandle Sunday afternoon causing damage and sporadic power outages.

While strong winds are nothing new in the panhandle, yesterday's wind was a force to be reckoned with.

Trampolines were flipped, trees fell on top of cars and a familiar sign almost came crashing down.

The First National Bank sign could be seen swaying in the wind, when someone called it in to the Fire Department.

The sign is on the corner of Broadway and 20th Street, very close to a stoplight and sidewalks.

Firefighter Captain Dan Hubbs says they were able to keep the sign from falling and thankful no one got hurt.

"Well we were a little bit busy with the gusting winds that created some problems. It started to blow the sign at First National Bank over, broke a couple of ¾ inch bolts actually out of the concrete which caused the sign to tip," Hubbs said.

Torrington was also hard hit, a trailer home was damaged and there were numerous vehicle accidents due to blinding dust being picked up by the wind.

Visibilities were so poor officers weren't able to respond to several of those accidents.
