Rainy season may bring relief to farmers

Posted: Updated:

Experts say the state's soil moisture reserve is gone, but a panhandle educator says farmers shouldn't worry quite yet.

Jim Shield, extent ion educator at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, says the rainy season is ahead, and this year's cooler temperatures are a good sign.

That's good news for producers who have had a tough year.

"If we could stay a little bit cooler a little bit longer... get some moisture and then go into growth we should be in pretty good shape."

Shield says the state's range could take years to recover from the damage caused by the drought.
