Sidney man charged with hate crime

A western Nebraska man has been charged with a hate crime in the March assault of another man at a Sidney bar.

Cheyenne County Deputy Attorney Jonathan Stellar says 28-year-old Nathan Pohl, of Sidney, suddenly attacked a man on March 2 after first greeting him at the bar. Stellar says witnesses reported Pohl uttering anti-gay slurs and saying he ``doesn't like gays,'' before the attack.

A police report says the man who was attacked had been seen holding hands with another man before the assault.

Pohl was arrested on suspicion of said third-degree assault, disturbing the peace and criminal trespass. But prosecutors have charged Pohl with assault, enhanced to a felony because he is accused of a hate crime.

Pohl was ordered Monday to stand trial on the charge.
