New KOTA Territory cafe quickly becoming local favorite

When Tauna Shahan decided to open Sweet Lou's, she had something a little smaller in mind.

Shahan's vision was to open a café she could run by herself, and still be home in time for her kids at the end of the school day.

"The more we started planning, the bigger it got; the more it turned into," says Tauna.  "I guess this is what it was supposed to be."

Sweet Lou's Bakery N' Café offers made-from-scratch baked goods and meals, for breakfast and lunch.

"There are not that many restaurants that do things from scratch.  Most of its frozen or already prepared," says Annette Barcus, a baker at the café.

Annette Barcus has been working at the bakery since Sweet Lou's opened, last September.

"I come in at 4 in the morning, and I start all of the bread dough and the rolls and bake the bread," says Barcus.

When you eat at Sweet Lou's, saving room for dessert is a must. The sweets are baked fresh every morning and you can choose from favorites, like their enormous cinnamon rolls, or classics, like a turnover.

"The display case is kind of just filled with whatever we feel like making. We flip through old cook books or pinterest or the Internet or family recipes."

At Sweet Lou's, the menu is always changing.  Shahan says they love experimenting with new recipes.

"We try new things all the time and we kind of go off of feedback from other people, 'oh, that was really good,' and we'll keep it. 'eh, that's not so great,' then we get rid of it," says Shahan.

From the restaurant's home cooked food, to it's bright decor and friendly staff, Sweet Lou's has something for everyone.

"If you need your day brightened up, come to Sweet Lou's. We'll make you laugh before you leave."
