Disconnected air hose cause of Thursday train delays

Posted: Updated:

A disconnected air hose between one of the hundred-plus Union Pacific railcars passing through Gering is likely the cause of a Thursday afternoon delay.

Around 2 p.m., an eastbound Union Pacific train stopped on the tracks, blocking the 10th and 7th Street railroad crossings.

U.P. Media Spokesperson Mark Davis says that one of the air hoses was most likely hanging too low when it hit the railroad crossing, it became uncoupled.

Once that air hose loses all of its pressure, all emergency brakes automatically kick on.

Train crews had to walk along the track and manually check each air hose to find the faulty one. It then takes about 15 minutes for to build the air pressure back up.

The train began to move around 3:15 p.m., and by 3:25 both crossings were open for motorists to continue to their destinations.
