Alliance celebrates 125 years with a beard contest

A panhandle city is celebrating their 125th anniversary in a unique way.

But the women of the city are still unsure if it's a good one.

The men of alliance are putting down their razors.

"I remember my father growing a beard in the 60's, so it's been done many times. It's just a fun, easy way to have a competition and show your community pride. I mean what's easier than not shaving," Owner of Redman's Shoes, David Pearse said.

David Pearse had the idea to celebrate Alliance's anniversary with a beard contest.

31 contestants will be competing in five categories, such as best duck dynasty, good try, different colors and Zach Galifinakis.

"I think people are having fun seeing them, they're giving the gentlemen a hard time. Every time we see them, we see different stages of their beard growth," Historic Main Street Manager, Debby Feller said.

And it's bringing people together the way small towns usually do.

"It's just brought a lot of fun camaraderie and we have some prominent business men in the community who have been great sports," Feller said.

"Well I've seen more beards. I think its bringing people together. It just gives them a really easy way to show support, and be a part of the community, and put down your razor and show everybody you love Alliance," Pearse said.

Supporting the community by going back to their roots, having fun and bringing out the best in everyone.

"This is just for fun you know, many times we do fundraisers and we have so many of them. So we decided this would just be something for fun," Feller said.

Beard growing kicked off mid March and the finale will be July 18th during Alliance's Heritage Days.

And a local salon has even agreed to do a shave off when all is said and done.

"It's feeling good on a wintry day like today, but come summer it'll be nice to take it all off," Pearse said.
