Lawmakers wage battle against synthetic drugs

Posted: Updated:

Nebraska lawmakers are debating a bill that would ban chemicals used in synthetic drugs, which mimic the effects of substances like methamphetamine and ecstasy.

Over the past few years, lawmakers have outlawed some synthetic drugs, including K2 and bath salts.

But bill introducer Senator Beau McCoy says drug manufacturers have changed their chemical formulas to skirt drug laws.

Newer generations of the drugs are legal and many teenagers can be buy them online.

Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff says he has not heard of most of these drugs or the chemicals... And hopes to educate parents and teachers about the effects of these drugs.

"I hope we can get a campaign put together in some form of manner, to start to tell the story about what is really occurring and what we need to do to correct this."

Lawmakers approved a technical change to the bill on Thursday but did not advance the measure itself.
