Scottsbluff man arrested for child abuse

A Scottsbluff man is charged with child abuse, after allegedly throwing and hitting his 6-year-old son.

Joseph Hafner was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Police began to investigate after his son told school officials that his smashed his face to the ground and spanked his lower back.

Police contacted Hafner, who told Scottsbluff Police Officers that "He did it" and they "should arrest him now."

Hafner said he was under a tremendous amount of stress at the time. But when his son denied taking a key that went missing he "lost it." Hafner told police he picked his son up and threw him onto a carpeted kitchen floor, causing his son to have a bloody nose and lip.

He then admitted to striking his on with an open hand in the small of his back. A doctor at the hospital saw several hemorrhages on the child, multiple contusions on the lower back, and a grab wound on the right arm.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for May 21st at 9:30 a.m. in Scotts Bluff County Court.
