Discover the world's largest Paleo-Indian bison bone bed

Posted: Updated:

Tucked away in the hills of the Oglala National Grassland in the Nebraska National Forest, is the World's largest Paleo- Indian bison bone bed.

"This site is really incredible in the sense that there's been so many years of research done here and every year we really do learn something new," says Anthropology professor at St. Cloud State University, Mark Muniz.

Every summer Muniz travels with a student field team to Hudson Meng.

For five weeks, he and his group immerse themselves in hands–on research hidden beneath the prairie of the Oglala National Grassland.

"A group of hunters and gatherers with their families came and they conducted a large scale bison hunt," says Muniz.  "After that period of time, it's likely their descendants came back to this place again and again."

Muniz believes that multiple centuries of bison hunts make this location the largest bison bone bed' and at approximately 10,000 years old, Hudson Meng is arguably the oldest extinct bison bone site in the Western Hemisphere."

The research center is more than just an active archeological dig site, guided tours are also available for people interested in learning about the area's rich history.

"One of my favorite parts of the job is working with the tourists and their excitement, the little kids, and for all the family members," says Park Ranger Jessica Fischer.

Fischer says visitors tend to get the most excited when they catch the archeological team in action.

Since 2006, Muniz has brought a team every summer and says his research is nowhere near complete.

"It's just an amazing place," says Muniz.  "It's just a wonderful place.  There is so much to know that we can't just turn our backs and walk away yet."

Hudson Meng is open from 9a.m. to 5p.m. daily, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
