National Defense bill heads to congress

Posted: Updated:

Congress is set to act this week on a National Defense priority bill that contains controversial issues such as the Guantanamo Bay prison for terror suspects.
U.S. Senator Deb Fischer says she wont discusses specifics of the bill until congressional committees complete mark-ups of the bill this week.

The National Defense Authorization Act lays out the budget and priorities of the Department of Defense for the next fiscal year, including funding of the Guantanamo Bay Cuban prison.

Fischer says she is reviewing the bill's proposed amendments.
"I will continue to support policies that are responsible, cost effective, and that enhance our National Security and out defense readiness."
Fischer says she is working to ensure the military's strategic command program STATCOM is able to continue.
