Dawes County holds one of Nebraska's most impressive toy collection

Posted: Updated:
All month long we are 'discovering' the upper panhandle area of Dawes County.

For our look into the northeastern region today, our Anndrea Anderson shows us one of the most impressive toy collections you'll probably ever see.

"His thing in life was to gather toys," said Dawes County Museum Director Belvedene Lecher.
And that's exactly what Randy Heesacker did.
"He went all over the country and they said he could outbid anybody."
Not much is known about Mr. Heesacker, other than he loved toys and spent years collecting them.
"We figure about 50 years, and you can gather a lot in that time it looks like."
After his death, Heesacker's toys ended up at the Dawes County Museum, where a special addition was added just to house them.
"We will never be able to show them all."
"Museum volunteers don't know exactly how many toys are in Heesacker's collection, but there are over a thousand in this room alone."
While it is obvious Mr.Heesacker loved collecting toys...
"his house was just crammed with all of these toys."
Museum volunteers are still in the dark as to why he collected them.
"It was just a fascination of his, maybe he didn't have a lot of toys as a child."
In Chadron, anndrea Anderson, KOTA Territory news.

Museum volunteers don't know why Heesacker left all his toys to the museum, but they're working hard to build display cases to show as much of them off as they can.
