Discover the Nebraska National Forest

Posted: Updated:

As we continue to discover the people, places, and things that make Dawes County a great place to live and visit, we explore the natural beauty of the Nebraska national forest.

"The Nebraska National Forest is actually in two-parts," says Forester with the Nebraska National Forest , John Lee.  "Part of it is down in Halsey and that would be the Bessie Ranger District and we're in the Pine Ridge District of the Nebraska National Forest."

The 52,000 acre Pine Ridge Ranger District makes-up roughly 36% of the Nebraska National Forest.

Lee says what makes the area especially neat, is that visitors can view a multitude of landscapes from grasslands, to rolling hills and forested areas.

The national forest also has a variety of recreational activities for people to enjoy.

"We have camp sites, we have hiking trails, we have a National Recreational Area that has a number of trails on it.  We also boarder up against the state's Wildlife Management Areas," which Lee says contains a number of hiking trails, as well.
