Fort Robinson offers history, recreation all in one

Posted: Updated:

Fort Robinson in northwestern Nebraska is one of the state's premier parks.

Many people visit to go horseback riding or camping, but as our anndrea Anderson shows us, Fort Robinson is also home to hundreds of years of history.

"One of the things that draws draw people here because they want to see the spot where crazy horse breathed last," says James Potter of the State Historical Society.

That spot would be here at Fort Robinson state park, the home to hundreds of years of Nebraskan history.

"We made it into a nice museum that has many exhibits that tell really the whole story of Fort Robinson from the first years all the way through the end of World War two."

Within those many years, Fort Robinson served as host to a number of operations, from a place to train military dogs...

"After World War two it became a large canine training core, they trained thousands of dogs to serve in military units all across the globe."

...to a place to hold enemy prisoners.

"Because we are a rather isolated place in the middle of the country the army decided it would be a great place to have a prisoner of war camp."

But now, Fort Rob mainly serves as a place for recreation and family vacations with a little bit of history mixed in.

"This room that I'm standing in is a refurbished officers quarters from 1908. People coming to visit Fort Robinson can stay in rooms that soldiers once occupied at the fort."

Whether it's the history or the recreation bringing visitors to Fort Robinson... they get a little bit of both worlds.

"This is one of Nebraska's premier state parks and also one of Nebraska premier historic sites, they dovetail rather neatly."
