Gering council member proposes joint agency for county communication center funding

Posted: Updated:

A plan to pay for the city's share of the new county communication center has been proposed.

That proposal is to create a joint public agency.

The plan is in response to letters sent out by the county last week that warns the city to pay up for the new communication center.

In the letter, it says if they don't, 911 emergency dispatch services would be cut off.

Council member Jill McFarland says a joint agency would be able to levy its own separate tax for the communication center so taxpayers don't end up paying the tax twice, once through the city and once through the county.
"Using the county valuation and this year's budget for the communication center, we would need 4.98 hundredths of a penny to generate the funds necessary for the communications center."
McFarland also proposed there be a technology committee to make sure the county stays on top of its 911 dispatch and emergency technology.
