Nebraska farmland values soaring to sky high prices

Land values in Nebraska are on the rise, and farmers are paying more for their farmland.
Statewide, farm values have jumped about 20 percent.

Many factors can account for the soaring prices, including higher crop prices and higher profitability.

Attractive interest rates are causing farmers to purchase more land, meaning less availability and therefore driving up land values.

Jessica Johnson at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln extension center says the upward trend has been occurring since the early 2000's.
"There's a lot of debate about whether prices will continue to rise and that's a good question to ask ourselves, where is the top of the market? Some people believe we have reached the top and as crop prices have reached their peak, at least for now, land values have hit their peak for now."
Johnson says farmland values have the potential to continue rising, but probably not at as high of a rate as last year.
