Landfill roofing shingles ban stays

Posted: Updated:

People in KOTA Territory will continue to have to find another way of disposing their roofing shingles, as the landfill ban remains in place.

The city of Gering instated the shingles ban last year because the landfill was reaching its capacity quicker than expected.

The ban was originally set for one year.

Sanitation Director Rick Hurt approached city council this week to ask that the ban be lifted.

But the city says instead of dumping, they want people to keep recycling their shingles.

"That is an option that the council may chose to go with, I'm simply asking that we lift the ban at this place in time."

The city is facing complaints from Gering residents about the height of the landfill blocking their view of the Scotts Bluff National Monument.
