Heineman shocked with meeting with tribal leader

Posted: Updated:

"Surprising" and "disappointing" are two words coming from Dave Heineman's office regarding a meeting with the Oglala Sioux tribal president regarding the issues in Whiteclay.
Yesterday, Bryan Brewer met with Heineman to talk about alcohol issues that he believes are caused by stores in Whiteclay.

Heineman and other key state officials had set one hour aside for the interview, but Brewer stormed out minutes into it, saying he felt disrespected by the governor.  "He is very angry. He was really upset about it. He said its your problem, it's not my problem, and I was at least hoping we'd be able to talk."
The governor remains firm that the state has no legal authority to ban alcohol sales in Whiteclay, and says there are other ways the tribe can help themselves.
"I also think as the leader of his tribe, he's got to put a focus on treatment and education relevant to alcohol abuse," says Heineman, "And so I kind of wait to hear from him exactly what he's thinking."
Heineman says he is still willing to address the issues stemming from Whiteclay.... while still upholding all state laws.
