Grant money available for big, shady trees

Posted: Updated:

Big, shady trees always provide a nice spot to cool off under during the summertime heat.

And a new grant could be bringing more of those big shade trees to KOTA Territory.

The Trees for Nebraska Towns Grant has a quarter-of-a-million dollars up for grabs to cities that wish to plant more shade trees.

The grant requires cities to plant large maturing trees exceeding 40-feet in height or spread, that will help to conserve water and improve storm water.

Trees acquired with the grant can be planted on private property, but must be available for public benefit.

Applications for the grant must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on October 1, 2013.
