Local Scottsbluff teen gets recognized for community service

Posted: Updated:

A senior from Minatare High School is making his community better and now he's being recognized for his efforts.

17-year-old Steven Juarez of Scottsbluff volunteers and works with kids who have cognitive disabilities and live in single family homes.

The organization, Voices For Children in Nebraska is awarding Juarez with the youth award.

Each year, a teen is given the award for improving the lives of kids and families.

For about 8 years, Juarez has spent time with a Special Olympics sports program working with kids.

Juarez says it feels awesome to be recognized but his real joy comes with helping other kids.

"I never really think I would get something this big, doing what I love everyday and keep these kids happy and just have fun."

Nebraska State Senator John Harms also commended Juarez for his efforts.

"I think it's absolutely marvelous that Steven has volunteered in our community...it sends a great message and he's a great role model and will be a better role model as he continues to mature."

Juarez will receive the Youth Award at a gala on September 21, 2013 at the Embassy Suites-La Vista.
