Torrington animal shelter addition underway

Posted: Updated:

The walls are up, the doggie doors are in, and soon the Waggin' Tails Animal Shelter will have a brand new facility to house their temporary residents.
The city of Torrington's animal shelter is undergoing an addition that will more than double the size of the current facility.

A 1,600 square-foot addition will provide the shelter will a number of amenities such as a laundry room and a quarantine area for sick animals.

The city of Torrington's Community Service Officer Teri Shinost says the animals are currently crammed into a space that is far too small.

The addition will allow for the proper separation of species.
"Things are going rather well, other than the month of April set us back about 30 - days," Shinost says about the region's April snow falls.  "We're still hoping to have this thing done and ready to roll by the first to middle part of September.  But only time will tell."

Shinost says contractors will return this week to put siding on the new structure.  The remainder of the project will be competed by volunteers.
