Valley Bank hosts 8th annual 'Shred-a-thon'

Posted: Updated:

More than 15 million people become victims to identity theft each year according to the Bureau of Justice Program.

To try and combat that statistic, Valley Bank held its 8th annual free 'Shred-a-thon' event in Gering on Friday.

People in the community lined up in their cars to drop of boxes and bags full of personal papers ready to be ripped into shreds.

The event was a way to help people who may not have access to a personal shredder.

Telemarketing and credit fraud are some of the more common scams out there but Amy Doll of Valley Bank says people should also be aware of medical fraud.

"...if you have your social security number on your doctor's bill, they use to do that. If you have old bills it's a great idea to get rid of those also. Just having your Medicare and Medicaid number on your forms, people can start using your benefits if they get a hold on that personal information..."

Experts say call local or state police if you feel that you have been a victim of a scam.
