'Summer Food Services' programs ends with a success

Posted: Updated:

It's back to school for students in less than a month.

Before cafeterias and school halls fill up, two schools in Scotts Bluff County finished filling up kids' stomachs with a free lunch today.

For the past two months, Lincoln Heights and Roosevelt Elementary schools teamed up with the U.S. department of Agriculture's 2013 summer food service program.

The program offered free meals to children 18 years old and under when schools were closed this summer.

Volunteers say the program was very successful.

"We have good kids." Said Janeen Pierce, Food Services Director of Scotts Bluff County Schools.

"They've been with us for many years. We get kids from high school they started out in the summer lunch program when they were just 5 or so. It's been a good program all these years."

Pierce says the program is always a good turnout.

Many kids look forward to it each summer.
