Possible safety improvements discussed at city meeting

Posted: Updated:

City staff from one KOTA Territory community discuss possible city-wide public safety improvements at a recent budget meeting.

The City of Scottsbluff is entertaining a request to increase the Public School System's 'Resource Officers'.  Currently the High School employs one Resource Officer.

A second will allow the school district to station someone at the Middle School too.

The City of Scottsbluff and the school district split the cost of the current Resource Officer, who is responsible for providing security and preventing crime while forming trusting relationships with the student body.
"When you can have that relationship between the law enforcement and the kids, things go a lot better," says Mayor Randy Meininger.  "It's better to work with things on the pre-side, then after the fact with the punishment."

The possibility of the city hiring a new firefighter was also a topic of conversation at the budget meeting.  Mayor Meininger says they are working on fitting that expense into the budget.

No final decisions have been made on the hiring of a new public resource officer or a fire fighter for the city at this point in time.
