Food Stamp program could be cut by $40 million dollars

Posted: Updated:

The government-issued Food Stamp program could see a drastic cut in funding.
House Republicans plan to propose a bill that will cut the U.S. Food Stamp program by $40 billion dollars over the next 10 years.

Nebraska Congressman Adrian Smith says if no changes are made, the government could end up sending trillions of dollars on Food Stamps in the next ten years.

Congressman Smith says the cuts should not affect those who depend on food stamp assistance.
"We're working to make the beneficiaries of Food Stamps are those folks that need it, and we want to have a strategy to help folks to become more independent."
It is reported than one in seven Americans receives Food Stamps.
