Library Director: children's summer reading habits encouraging

Posted: Updated:

Getting kids to pick up a book during the summer months can be a challenge.

But a KOTA Territory Library Director says summer vacation didn't stop the area children from hitting the books.
Library Director Isabel Hoy says it doesn't matter what kids are reading, just as long as they are.

She says the goal of the Torrington Public Library's summer reading program is to get kids excited about reading, and get them doing it on a regular basis.

Hoy says it's very important for young readers to continue advancing their reading skills during the summer months, so they don't lag behind when school begins.

Hoy says the program reached its maximum capacity this year and most of those children visited the library every week to check-out new reading material.
"What we try to do is establish a habit of visiting their local library once a week and I think we did a great job of that this summer.  So did the parents," Hoy adds with a chuckle.
Hoy says it's encouraging to see so many young readers visiting the library this summer.
