A Scottsbluff man convicted last month on a variety of charges has been sentenced to prison.

48-year-old John Tharp was sentenced to spend the next 7.5 - 12.5 years in prison. In September he  was found guilty on the following charges: third degree domestic assault, two counts of a felon in possession of a firearm, and making terroristic threats.

The entire incident began when he put a black powder gun to the head of his girlfriend. Tharp is a convicted felon and not able to possess firearms.

He has been given credit for 188 days served, and will be eligible for parole in six-and-a-half years.

During sentencing, Tharp told District Judge Randall Lippstreu that he believed his sentence was "a little overkill."
