Former Miss America recalls suicidal moment at SB National Monument

Posted: Updated:

Former Miss America Teresa Scanlan is back in the spotlight, but this time it has nothing to do with a shiny crown or a national title.
Scanlan recently made headlines in an Associated Press article about how she is settling in at college.

But it also mentioned a dark, tumultuous time for Scanlan that many never saw.

And in a YouTube video posted just days ago, Scanlan opens up about her struggles with depression, bullying, and even thoughts of suicide.

In a video diary Scanlan read from something she called 'My Other Bio,' a journal entry in which she details the deep feelings of anxiety, pressure and loneliness that almost brought her to the brink of suicide.

"I was taking a hike on the Scottsbluff National Monument, a sandstone bluff near my house... just like I had so many times before. But this time was different. I neared the edge. I inched closer. I stood at the brink, With my toes just barely touching earth, Almost hanging off into the empty air. I almost did it. But someone texted me right then And it shook me enough to step back."

Scanlan says it was only in March of this year when she contemplated jumping off the National Monument, but she says so much has changed since then.

She said she has since had deep discussions with her parents, started taking depression medication, and has discovered a newfound and deeper connection with God.

And now, she said she feels ready and comfortable to share her story in hopes to encourage others who may be in a similar situation.

Scanlan says she hopes to see the stigma surrounding mental illness to dissipate.
"I hope we might continue to speak about these issues and create awareness and encourage others who are struggling," Scanlan said.
