Gering landfill expands recycling program to commercial entities

Posted: Updated:

Big blue bins will soon be popping up around the city of Gering.

The bins came from a $15,000 dollar grant recently awarded to the Gering landfill.

The 30 blue containers will be used to collect recyclables from Gering businesses.

Landfill Director Rick Hurt says the landfill is taking more steps to make the city of Gering more recycle–friendly.

He says two years ago, the landfill started a single–stream recycling program for residential customers and is now looking to expand those services to commercial entities.

"We're trying to expand that program out to get some more volume into it. We're looking for cardboard, things like that we can take out of the waste stream for commercial entities," Hurt said.

The landfill is also seeking another grant to expand it's transfer station.
