Alliance city council writing ordinance to ban Chinese lantern fireworks

Posted: Updated:

The city of Alliance and the fire department are writing an ordinance that will ban the use of certain fireworks.

Right now, the city allows fireworks to be discharged on city owned property during the Fourth of July holiday.

There have been six reported fires caused by fireworks in the last three years.

Alliance Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker says many of the fires were caused by Chinese flying lanterns.

One incident cost about 5-thousand dollars worth of damage at the city's lake says Shoemaker.

And there have been several other close calls.

"Just this past Fourth of July fireworks season," Said Shoemaker. "We had a citizen contact me after fireworks and said chief, I had 14 flying lanterns laying in my wheat field and how that didn't go up is beyond me and I agreed with him 100 percent."

Chief shoemaker says the city also wants to reduce or extend the number of days fireworks are sold in the city.
