Golden shovels hit the ground at Riverside Discovery Center

Golden shovels hit the ground at the Riverside Discovery Center this morning.
It was all to make way for the zoo's newest addition, a Heritage Barn.

The 2,700 square foot barn will feature a 6 pen petting zoo as well as a classroom and an interactive space.

The groundbreaking is the first in a series of many, as the zoo is undergoing a major three phase construction project.
"We basically decided to focus on the inside first, as our phase one," said Interim RDC Board President Tony Kaufman. "This is going to be our Heritage Barn, and basically its going to relocate and have a few additions, but we are going to relocate our petting zoo and add some Heritage breeds in the future."
The Heritage Barn is slated to be completed by spring 2014, just in time to kickoff the zoo's spring season.
