Regional West Medical Center hosts first ever shooter exercise

Posted: Updated:

Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff was the scene for the hospital's first ever active shooter exercise.

Scottsbluff police Captain Brian Wasson says no matter the venue, law enforcement have been trained to "eliminate the threat" as fast as possible.

Inside the building, SWAT members responded to all three floors looking for the shooter and getting people out of the building as fast as possible.

Patty Durner of CAPWN's Emergency Preparedness Committee Health Center says she was inside one room when the shooter fired at other people.

"You felt fear when he was carrying the gun and when he was shooting with the gun fire. The noise and then also all the smoke from the gun fire, it just made it all seem very, very real."

Police say the shooting exercise was intended to be as realistic as possible.

Captain Wasson says it took about nine minutes from the time police received the call to when the shooter surrendered.
