Annual 'Toy Run' providing community assistance for 30 years

Posted: Updated:

A group of people from the panhandle are kicking–off the holiday season today.  Now you may be thinking ‘its only October' but this group has a good reason for starting early.

American Bikers Aiming Toward Education (ABATE) are teaming up with Wagon Wheel Good Sam's Camping Club and the Knights of Columbus for an annual holiday Toy Run.

For 30–years ABATE has been hosting a holiday toy drive to ensure children throughout the community have a present to open during the holidays.

Food pantry items and cash donations are also accepted and dispersed throughout the community.

Today the parade of bikes will collect toys from 15 toy collection boxes that have been set-up at businesses around the Scottsbluff / Gering community.

"I guess the thing that I really like is just how we can make a difference," says ABATE member Woody Willet, whose been involved with the Toy Run since 2001.  "We look every year for different ways to help people. This is one that's been proven does make a difference."

The annual Toy Run is the first in a series of fund raising events that helps the community provide toys and food for hundreds of children and families throughout the area during the Holiday season.
