Five more cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in the Scotts Bluff County.
That brings the total number of laboratory-confirmed cases in the panhandle to thirteen.

Whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, is a serious respiratory illness that is often accompanied by persistent coughing fits.

Immunization Clinic Coordinator Sandy Preston says one of the most dangerous things about Pertussis, is that it is often mistaken for a cold.
"Symptoms of whooping cough often do present much like a cold or an upper respiratory infection, the difference being the cough can develop and it is persistent. If you're still having a cough and it's been 10 days to two weeks, probably want to have things checked out."
Preston says the best protection against whooping cough is to get vaccinated.

More information about the vaccinations can be found at the regional west immunization clinic.
