NE lawmaker wants to allow concealed weapons on school campuses

Posted: Updated:

A Nebraska lawmaker is planning to introduce a bill in the upcoming legislative session that could let teachers bring concealed weapons into schools.

Senator Mark Christensen says he wants to bring the bill to the table once again, in response to recent school shootings.

A similar bill failed in 2011.

Christensen says this time, the new version of the bill would include tougher requirements for teachers to obtain and conceal weapons on campus.

For instance, teachers would be required to hold a concealed–carry permit and take additional training lessons.

Final approval would be up to the local school board.

Education and law–enforcement groups have opposed similar bills in the past.

The president of the Nebraska State Education Association says her group has a zero–tolerance policy for deadly weapons on school property.
