Vandals wreak havoc on Mitchell; slash tires & destroy property in the process

More than 60 vehicles had their tires slashed as part of a "senseless" crime spree that took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in Mitchell.

Mitchell Police Chief Mike Cotant says that between 3 and 5 a.m., individuals came into the city and "vandalized the whole town."

He says that the culprits slashed the tires of dozens of vehicles, as well as smashing lawn ornaments, planters and more.

As of Monday, he estimates the amount of damage exceeds the $10,000 mark.

Chief Cotant says many residents are now helpless victims. "They feel violated," says Cotant. "It hurts the people and it hurts the image of the town. My idea of this is it's stupidly."

Mitchell resident Dan Newens echoes that sentiment, but doesn't think it was anybody from the city who committed the crime. "(It's) an absolute disappointment. We don't raise our kids in Mitchell to be like that. Whoever it was- if you know somebody- tell somebody. Our kids are not like that in this community."

Mayor Brian Taylor says these crimes were malicious, and is confident that justice will be served to the people responsible for this crime spree.

Chief Cotant asks that anybody with information regarding these crimes to call the Communications Center at 436-6666 or Crimestoppers at 632-STOP.
