Torrington teacher named GCSD #1 Teacher of the Year

A Torrington Middle School (TMS) teacher is named Goshen County Schools ‘Teacher of the Year.'

Mary Werner has been teaching eighth grade math and algebra one at TMS for the past 12 years.

She says being named 2013 / 2014 ‘Teacher of the Year' is a humbling honor.

"If you were to know all of the teachers that I work with, in this entire district as well, it's very humbling that I've been chosen to represent them and I'm just thrilled about it. I'm very excited."

Among her many attributes, Werner has a knack for coming–up with creative lesson plans.

Werner says she and her students were actually working on a unique exercise the day she was presented with the award.

"I was doing a lesson on Guitar Hero—slope, rate of change, how fast your fingers move while playing Guitar Hero at certain levels—teaching slope in a different way," says Werner.  "And I'm all dressed up in my 80's garb and my hair is all teased up to the hilt, and they have a surprise assembly for me."  Werner says it was exciting, humorous and a tad embarrassing all in one.

In addition to being named Goshen County Schools Teacher of the Year, Werner was also named one of the top ten teachers in the State of Wyoming.
