Community forum discusses panhandle population, education, job statistics

Posted: Updated:

Statistics show as a whole, Nebraska's population is on the rise, but smaller counties are seeing a decline in people.

More than 50 people showed up to the ‘Call to Action Community Forum' hosted by University of Nebraska-Omaha Doctor Jerry Deichert.

The State of the Valley forum covered and education and income levels in the panhandle, as well as population statistics.

Doctor Deichert says Scottsbluff was one of the few counties that saw growth in the past decade.

"Scotts Bluff collectively grew 1.3% percent, the counties like Cheyenne lost 4.4% percent and the counties like Morrill, and Garden, and Banner, etc, lost 7.7% percent. So the states population is becoming more and more concentrated in the counties with at least 10,000 in population."

Senator john harms was present for the three hour presentation, and will take all of the findings and discussion topics back with him to the next legislative session.
