Chadron Click-it-or-Ticket campaign increased seat belt use by 18%

Posted: Updated:

A week-long seatbelt safety enforcement in the city of Chadron proved to increase seatbelt use by 18% percent.

Chadron police officers made a total of 54 stops during the week-long Click it or Ticket campaign.

The department received a $1,500 dollar grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety that provided 12 officers and 4 dispatchers for the 7 day enforcement.

Officer Erick Wckman says he's pleased with this year's enforcement, and believes it helps to make the community a safer place.

"I believe it's definitely necessary," Wickman said. 'To enforce a seatbelt is not just enforcing a law, its enforcing safety for the drivers, not just the drivers but the passengers and children. That's kind of the main thing, safety for everybody."

Seatbelts are credited for saving an estimated 12,000 people in 2011 alone.
