County jail dealing with overcrowding; looking to add bunk beds

Posted: Updated:

Space is becoming limited as more and more inmates have been sent to Scotts Bluff County jail.

Now officials are asking county commissioners for help with a plan to alleviate overcrowding.

Earlier this week, Correction Director of Scotts Bluff County Jail Ron Johns spoke to county commissioners about the issue.

Johns provided a plan to have 16 bunk-beds added.

The jail was built to house about 160 detainees by the end of November, 200 detainees were being held at one time.

Johns told commissioners that having extra beds would provide help with overcrowding and revenue by adding $45 a day.

"We've averaged over the five years about 50-thousand dollars housing detainees this year. It's been extraordinary but we're at 116-thousand this year and so those beds will really help us deflect some of that cost." Said Johns.

Johns says part of the overcrowding issue deals with an increase in "failure to pay" warrants in the county as many people are unable to pay and have to spend time in the jail.
