Council members closer to banning sky lanterns in Alliance

Posted: Updated:

Sky lantern fireworks could be a thing of the past for Alliance if council members add it to a list of already banned fireworks in the city.

The plan to ban sky lanterns has been on the agenda for council members the past few weeks.

Earlier this year, a sky lantern caused about five-thousand dollars in damages around the city's lake.

Council members are also looking to change wording in ordinance 2743.

If approved, certain fireworks will be discharged until midnight of July 4th weather permitting.

Fireworks will also not be discharged in specific recreational areas such as near swimming pools.

"We had a number of problems of those starting fires and as I've been reading, a lot of other cities and a lot of states as well are actually dealing with the very same thing too." Said City Manager J.D. Cox.

City council members will have one more reading of the ordinance if needed to address the situation and ban the use of sky lanterns before the end of the year.
